Chicago Cubs Honor Perfect Season and National Championship Earned by Women’s Football Team

Chicago, IL August 26, 2013: The Chicago Cubs will honor the Chicago Force Women’s Tackle Football Team for their 2013 perfect season and National Championship title during the Cubs game on Tuesday, Sep 3 at Wrigley Field. The Quarterback for the Chicago Force and World Championship MVP, Sami Grisafe, will perform the National Anthem.
The Force (12-0) cruised to a convincing 81-34 win over the Dallas Diamonds to win the first Force national championship, avenging two previous championship game losses. Quarterback Sami Grisafe and teammate Jessica Javelet were named the co-MVPs of the National Championship game as Grisafe threw for 526 yards and 8 touchdowns, while Javelet had 11 receptions for 225 yards and 4 touchdowns.
During the 2013 perfect season, the Chicago Force out-scored their opponents 771-128. Chicago quarterback Sami Grisafe was named the WFA National Conference Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 4301 yards and 57 touchdowns. Line backer Darcy Leslie was named the WFA National Conference Defensive Player of the Year after collecting 96 tackles and 28 tackles for a loss this season. In addition, Linda Bache was named the WFA Owner of the Year. This was Bache’s 11th year with the team, and the Force has made the playoffs ten out of its eleven seasons.
Among the Chicago Force players who will be recognized on the field will be the nine Chicago Force players who were members of the record setting 2013 U.S. Women’s National Team that won the IFAF Women’s World Championship on July 6, 2013 in Finland. The head coach of the Chicago Force, John Konecki (of the Illinois State Champion Crete-Monee football team) was also the head coach of the 2013 U.S. Women’s National Team. Players from Team USA include quarterback and World MVP Sami Grisafe and Ashley Berggren, a Barrington native and former University of Illinois basketball player, who at one time held the leading scoring record and is the only female athlete to have her jersey raised at the University of Illinois.

The Chicago Force Women’s Tackle Football Team is the reigning National Champion of the Women’s Football Alliance, a league of over fifty teams nationwide. The Force’s overall record is 96-16, which includes 8 division titles, 3 conference championships and 1 national championship.
The 2013 perfect season included individual award winners: Offensive Player of the Year (Sami Grisafe) and Defensive Player of the Year (Darcy Leslie) and Owner of the Year (Linda Bache). In addition, Sami Grisafe and Jessica Javelet received co-MVPs for the National Championship game.
Nine players from the Chicago Force (the most from any team) and the majority of the coaching staff were members of the record-setting U.S. National Team, which won the IFAF Women’s World Championship, defeating Canada 64-0, in Finland on Jul 6, 2013. Sami Grisafe is an all-star, World MVP athlete and award-winning singer-songwriter based in Chicago.
